Two years ago, we built a 408 CID LS engine, dubbed the “Nighthawk” (pictured above). The build was detailed in Engine Professional magazine, displayed at the AERA booth at the PRI show, where it was raffled off to a lucky winner.
Well, we’re at it again, this time with a vengeance. While the previous build boasted a relatively mild 408 cubic inches of displacement and posted 621 HP on the dyno, we anticipate quite a few more ponies for the current build. As in the recent past, the current engine will be displayed at this year’s PRI show in Indianapolis, to be raffled off for the benefit of the EREF (Engine Rebuilders Educational Foundation).
The current build, labeled the “Nighthawk II LS,” features a 4.131-inch bore coupled with a 4.000” stroke, for a whopping 428 CID. A substantial upgrade centers around the foundation of a super-stout Dart SHP LS Next iron block, monstrous-flowing AFR Mongoose LS3 heads and a Holley Sniper EFI.
As a tribute to the initial Nighthawk build, and a continuation of the appearance theme, this build will feature an all-black color base, contrasted with red MSD coils and wires and a gold-coat central EFI unit.
