Thread: Honda H22A1 cylinder honing

  1. Honda H22A1 cylinder honing

Does anyone have first hand experience with boring and honing the bores in a Honda H22A1 block? We have conflicting info as to whether this can be successfully accomplished. E-mail or call (toll-free) 877 416-5942 M-F 8-5 EST

    Thanks,

  2. I was told that it has more to do with whos piston you use.
JE said must install steel sleeve. Wiseco said no problem with
their piston no mods to block.

    Honda Performance Engines

    HELLO SKIP, HELLO BRIAN!!

The H22A1 according to Honda is one of their stock performance engines, which basicly means it has a little more horsepower than the basic stock engines Honda uses. Our (Tech Department) information from all we've talked to indicates better success if sleeves are installed on the PERFORMANCE HONDA engines. I personally called a local Honda dealer who's involved with the kids in the Chicago area who are modifying their engines for more performance. He indicated that even though HONDA supplies a .010" oversize piston for some of their engines, he does not recommend using one. He's seen too many of them fail so he suggests using the sleeves right off the bat. He also indicated internally Honda is also aware the oversize components do not seem to work. Long and short of it, unless we could look at the documented Honda procedure, a particular job may be short of what they can produce on a manufacturing level.

We're currently reveiwing our TB 1852 on honing FRM (Fiber-Reinforced Metal) on Honda engines to reflect the recommended honing process for those who opt for the honing oversize option. Watch your AERA monthly mailing to see the revised TB.

We've talked to some who've had success honing these blocks, others have had an engine or two that drink oil, they seem to be either really good, or really bad, nothing in-between. So, if you're confident of your procedures, go for it, if you want to get an extra $$$$ out of the job, talk them into the sleeves.

  4. I have done several H22 stock rebuilds using safety auto parts pistons following TB 1852 and no problems at all.
